GLOSSARY OF COMMON TERMS
B’rit – Covenant, Contract
B’rit Hadasha – New Testament, New or Renewed Covenant
Booths – Sukkah, a 3-sided structure with natural open roof, used during 40 years in the wilderness (Egypt escape)
Chanukkah – Hanukah (Feast of Dedication)
Derech – Way, Path, Journey, Custom
Elohim – God, judges
El Shaddai - God Almighty
Etog – A fruit, usually a citron, used during Sukkot
Hadas – A myrtle branch, used during Sukkot
Mashiach – Messiah, Christ, Anointed
Mitzrayim – Hebraic equivalent of “Egypt”
Mizvah or Mitzvot – Command, Commandment, Instructions, Principles for Living
Mo’adim – Appointed Times, God’s Calendar, Feast Days
Mo’ed – Seasons
Mosheh – Moses
Pleroo – Greek word meaning to fulfill, Fully teach or preach
Purim – Usually in March, it commemorates the deliverance of God’s people (See: Book of Esther)
Rosh Chodesh – New moon, New month, Head of the month
Ruach HaKodesh – The Holy Spirit
Shabbat – Sabbath, God’s appointed day of rest, Sundown Friday to Sundown Saturday. The 7th day.
Shalom – Used at meeting or parting, meaning “peace”
Shofar – A rams horn trumpet, Used as warning, call to arms, and in celebration
Tanakh – Old Testament. Comes from Torah (Instructions/Teaching/Law), Nevi’im (Prophets), Ketuvim (Writings). TaNaKh
Talmid – Disciple, Student
Torah – Teaching or instruction, Books of Law (Genesis – Deuteronomy)
Yahweh / YHVH / YHWH – The biblical proper name of God
Yeshua / Y’shua – The biblical proper name of Jesus, means “God Saves” or “Yah is my salvation”
